The manufacturing industry is embracing software over hardware as its primary business model. The report shows that the 84% of organizations in the sector are changing how they operate. In fact, 37% have already made a full shift to a software-centric business model, one that places software at the core of how a company runs and generates revenue.

Over half of respondents whose organization has either changed/is changing their business model from hardware-based selling to software-based selling state that the reason for doing so is to increase revenues (54%) and reduce costs (52%). Other reasons are to be more competitive in the market (45%) and to be able to offer more flexible packaging (27%). Only 23% state that the reason for changing the business model is to provide a better customer experience.

51% have already increased/included technical resources for R&D roles, while 41% are working with new partners or third parties. In addition, 98% report that their organisation has already/will retrain current employees and 95% either have or will recruit new employees.
